Leah LaRocco is in her third year of banding hummingbirds in Townsend, TN. She will share findings of her research project, which explores how adjusting backyard habitat from invasive species to native and beneficial plants can increase the hummingbird population in a particular area.

This webinar will cover the method of banding these tiny birds, which plants provide the greatest benefits for hummingbirds, and how people can make small changes to their property that will assist breeding and migratory hummingbirds.

About Your Guide
A resident of Townsend, Tennessee, Leah LaRocco is an avid hiker, guide, and volunteer with Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Through the Volunteers-In-Parks program, Leah has been involved with phenology plot monitoring, bird banding, and Adopt a Trail projects in the Smokies. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music business and, in 2019, completed the Southern Appalachian Naturalist Certification Program through Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. “Traveling to national parks, historic sites, and public lands has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the protection of these spaces as recreation areas for people and sanctuaries for flora and fauna,” Leah said. “Even though my career path led to music, a love for nature and the outdoors shaped the trajectory of my life.”

Leah also serves as the managing director of operations for awards and Membership & Industry Relations at the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs), serving music creators through professional development, member engagement, advocacy, and recognition of musical excellence.
