Saturday September 14

9:00 AM  –  2:00 PM

With fall migration in full swing, join expert birder Keith Watson to enjoy learning more about observing and identifying birds. Our group will begin the day in the training room, where Keith will share images, offer suggestions and answer questions that will optimize birding know-how for novice to the expert birder. After our classroom meet-and-greet, we'll head outside to watch birds as they comb the woodlands and waterside for insects and seeds.

If time allows, we'll carpool along 441 South to the Cove Hardwood Nature Trail in Chimney Top Picnic Area and explore here as well. Depending on the recent weather patterns, we should expect to add at least a dozen warbler sightings to our lists!

**To reduce our impact, carpooling to Cove Hardwood Nature Trail may be necessary, so please come prepared with a backpack to make getting around easier.

Event rating: Easy active. Great for participants who want to participate in a low-impact outdoor program. Distances: 2 - 5 miles maximum. Settings: Walks that ramble along uneven trails and waterways with exposed roots and rocks. Potential for slight elevation gain and loss. Participants could encounter hazards such as exposed roots and rocks, insects and snakes. See our Activity Rating Scale.

Mileage for this Event: 4 miles maximum.

What to Bring: Binoculars are a must and a camera if you're a photographer! We'll stay on well-maintained trails most of the time, but wear good footwear and be prepared for some trail walking on uneven surfaces. Bring a backpack with enough water and snacks for your comfort. Download digital version of Great Smoky Mountains Trail Map.
