Date: Saturday, February 16, 2019
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Does duck identification leave you cold in the winter months? Then layer up and join us for a winter waterfowl viewing and identification adventure at scenic Lake Junaluska, N.C., with expert birder Kevin Burke of Hendersonville, North Carolina.
At this time of year, we'll see most ducks in their breeding plumage in anticipation of the upcoming season of courting, nesting and rearing young. While males are the most distinctively marked of the sexes and the easiest to identify, females have warmer color tones and can be more challenging.
During our outing, Kevin will provide us with some special strategies of observation like body shape, significant color markings, behavior and habitat to help you ID a duck anywhere the waters may take you. Species we hope to observe are Ruddy duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Redhead, Hood Merganser, Ring-necked Duck, American Widgeon, Northern Pintail and anything else that might be on or around this beautiful mountain setting.
Mileage: 2 miles maximum
Activity Level: Easy to moderate. This will be a leisurely walk with stops along the way.

What to bring: In addition to plenty of water, an appropriate amount of food for your comfort, sturdy trail shoes, your favorite field guide, binoculars and notebook, we also recommend you dress in layers, wear a hat and gloves and bring along a backpack to store your extra gear in. A personal first-aid kit and a trekking pole may be helpful as well.
