Meeting location: Oconaluftee Visitor Center Multi-purpose Room 1194 Newfound Gap Road Cherokee, North Carolina 28719

Become a part of the Citizen Science movement! Citizen Science pairs research and education with everyday citizens, like you, who enjoy documenting the flora and fauna in the Smokies, in your backyard and in other natural areas across the country.

Instructor and tenured GSMA naturalist Wanda DeWaard will start off with a brief introduction to the history of Citizen Science and its benefits. Then, she'll go over special hands-on techniques on how to safely collect, identify and photograph specimens before sharing them on a number of information-packed websites for naturalists of all ages.

Mileage: 2.5 miles maximum. Upload a FREE park trail map.

Activity rating: Easy to moderate. Waterway and field observations/collection will require walking on uneven surfaces.

What To bring: In your day-pack loaded with your hiking safety gear, make sure you bring enough food and water for your comfort. Wear sturdy shoes for with soles made for hiking and bring all-weather gear (we go rain or shine). We also recommend bringing your smartphone, a notebook with a writing utensil, sun protection and trekking poles.
