Saturday April 6

10:00 AM  –  2:00 PM

Guide: Butch McDade

Meeting Location: Appalachian Clubhouse

Join retired park ranger Butch McDade on a walk through the Elkmont historic district of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A gem of a location that has seen many changes over the years.

During our outing, we'll discuss the days when ancient hunters and gatherers used the water drainage of the Little River, the timber cutting years, the advent of the resort communities and conclude our experience with a story about the establishment of the park.

Mileage: 2 miles maximum

Activity Level: Easy to moderate - We will be walking along paved and uneven surfaces for the majority of the trip.

What to bring: In addition to plenty of water, an appropriate amount of food for your comfort, comfortable walking shoes and your favorite field guide, we recommend that you bring binoculars, something to take notes with, and dress in layers with hats and gloves, bring along a backpack and rain gear. A personal first-aid kit and trekking poles may be helpful as well.
