The current Steve Kemp writer and illustrator in residence, Laurie McDowell, will lead a workshop on ecological illustration! After a brief lesson on the basics of drawing plants, you’ll go out onto Fighting Creek Nature Trail for some in-the-field drawing with Laurie. 

All skill levels are welcome—just come ready to try and have some fun!

What to Bring

  • Binoculars
  • Applicable field guides of interest

Required gear for all activities:

  • Comfortable and sturdy shoes/boots 
  • Rain gear and dress in layers for potentially changing weather
  • Sun protection (sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen)
  • Trekking poles or hiking staff to aid stability
  • Food and plenty of water
About Your Guide 
As the 2026 Steve Kemp writer in residence, Laurie McDowell, is spending time in the Smokies to witness the wildflowers that are already blooming on trails like Porters Creek, Schoolhouse Gap, and Cosby Nature Trail. Coming to us from Randall’s Island in New York City, where he is an ecological horticulturalist, McDowell is also both a poet and an ecological illustrator.
