Sunday September 29

10:00 AM  –  2:30 PM

Pull up a chair and join us for a special birding event to listen, look and work together to identify and count how many different species are spotted during the fall migration south with expert birder Keith Watson.

Soaring above the Appalachian Mountains on thermals and updrafts, Broad-winged Hawks, Red-tailed Hawks, Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks with some Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Merlin, American Kestrel and Red-shouldered Hawks are expected in higher numbers than usual. We will also take time to bird this area to identify and count songbirds, such as Warblers, vireos, tanagers, flycatchers and more.

The main objective of this event is to have a relaxed adventure at Look Rock Fire Tower to observe, identify, count and report the raptors and other species to Cornell Lab of Ornithology's eBird, a free, worldwide database where you can keep track of your bird lists, explore the latest sightings in your area or around the world, contribute to science, conservation and education and be a part of the world's largest birding community!

Event rating: Easy active. Great for participants who want to participate in a low-impact outdoor program. Distances: 2 - 5 miles maximum. Settings: Walks that ramble along uneven trails and waterways with exposed roots and rocks. Potential for slight elevation gain and loss. Participants could encounter hazards such as exposed roots and rocks, insects and snakes. See our Activity Rating Scale HERE.

Mileage for this Event: 3 miles maximum.

Meeting Location: Look Rock Tower Parking Area - Foothills Parkway Southwest #6.

What to Bring: Bring a chair that is easy to carry, binoculars, a camera, hat, sunscreen, your favorite field guide and plenty of food and water for your comfort. We'll stay on well-maintained trails most of the time, but wear good footwear and be prepared for some trail walking on uneven surfaces. Br but will also add any avian species spotted at the Look Rock location of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Our expert guide will be on hand to assist birders of all levels with tips and techniques of identification, building your life-list, reporting sightings to a Citizen Science database and much more!
