Naturalist Program - Butterflies and Moths of the Smokies

This event is no longer on sale.

Sunday July 14

9:00 AM  –  2:00 PM

With Liz Domingue and Charlie Smith

Meeting location: Cades Cove Orientation Shelter located at the beginning of the one-way Cades Cove Loop Road.

Spend quality time in Cades Cove identifying and learning about butterflies with Liz Domingue and Charles Smith, naturalists and authors of the new field guide Butterflies and Moths of the Smokies. As we explore various habitats in one of the best spots in the park for observing butterflies, we will have a wonderful opportunity to see a variety of species, from swallowtails and fritillaries to skippers and sulphurs. Bring binoculars if you have them and wear comfortable walking shoes. If you want, also bring a copy of the new field guide to use during class and have it signed by the authors.

Event rating: Easy Active. Great for participants who want to participate in a low-impact outdoor program. Distances: 2 - 5 miles maximum. Settings: Walks that ramble along uneven trails and waterways with exposed roots and rocks. Potential for slight elevation gain and loss. Participants could encounter hazards such as exposed roots and rocks, insects and snakes.

What to bring: In addition to a day-pack with plenty of water, an appropriate amount of food for your comfort, wear sturdy trail shoes, bring your favorite field guide, a hand magnification lens and a notebook, we also recommend you bring a hat, sunscreen and rain gear. A personal first-aid kit and trekking poles may be helpful as well.
